How it started

Hong Kong, 16 September 2014. A link to a "coordination app" called Code4HK is spreading through messengers. People install it because the link came from someone they know. Inside, a stranger is watching: the app reads messages, takes contacts and call history, and sends someone a dot on a map.

Twelve days later, on 28 September, mainland China blocks Instagram. The reason: photos from the streets of Hong Kong.

One of us was studying in Hong Kong that autumn — an engineer, a graduate of the Department of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Within two weeks, people around us were read first and cut off from the world next. The two looked different but worked the same way: whoever holds the channel decides what you see and what others see about you.

Since that autumn, access and protection have been one thing for us. That is why we have never sold them separately.

The other of us came to the same problem from the opposite side: MGIMO, a bachelor's in Information Technology in International Business. The engineer asked where packets get lost and why Tokyo is faster than the next town. The other asked why people pay for a service and why one day they stop. We argued for a long time about whose problem it was, until we saw it was a shared one.

We started without big words — with a small shop selling network hardware and digital goods. It fed the two of us and taught the main lesson: people don't buy megabits, they buy a thing that just works. Anything that needs a manual comes back with a refund request.

Then we built a secure connection for ourselves and a dozen friends, so we didn't have to trust café and hotel Wi-Fi. We gave it away and fixed it in the evenings. One day we noticed friends were bringing their friends, and we had no evenings left.

Then came the years people usually leave out. Investment, launches that went nowhere. We tried doing it the usual way, selling speed and protection separately. Both times we ended up with a product we wouldn't use ourselves.

So we went back to the autumn of 2014. In 2016 we registered Atlas Secure in Hong Kong, the city where we first saw why this matters.

Today Atlas Secure is part of the QoDev group. An accelerator for phones and computers: fast internet, and your business stays yours. Dedicated servers for those who need the whole machine. Traffic packs for when a regular connection isn't enough.

All those years left us one rule. Every number on this site comes from the code the service runs on: countries, devices, speed, prices.
